Flanges are a very important part of a piping system in terms of providing the point to connect pipes, valves, and pumps among other instruments. Selection of the flange of choice is crucial regarding system integrity, safety, and long-term system performance.

Whether you are designing a high-pressure oil pipeline or a low-temperature HVAC system, here is what you should take into consideration when choosing the suitable flange.

Choose the Right Flange Type

Different types of flanges have different uses based on the application requirements:

  • Weld Neck Flanges: The best suited in high-pressure, high-temperature systems. They give great stress dispensation.
  • Slip-On Flanges: These are simpler to install and they can be utilized in systems with low pressure.
  • Blind Flanges: These are applied to close the endings of pipes or valves.
  • Socket Weld and Threaded Flanges: They are the best in systems that have low pressures and piping of small diameters.
  • Lap Joint Flanges: These are useful where it is necessary to dismantle the system frequently.

Select the Correct Material

The material of the flange must fit with the material of the pipe and with the transported fluid. Common materials include:

Carbon Steel

Robust and economical, best used in non-corrosive settings.

Stainless Steel

Does not corrode and is suitable under aggressive or sanitary environments.
